Henrik Lundqvist was born on March 2, 1982 in Are, Sweden. Henrik and his twin brother Joel were born to Eva Johansson and Peter Lundqvist. The area of Sweden that these two brothers grew up in is best known for alpine skiing, but they chose to play ice hockey instead. At a very early age, as kindergarteners, they would skate on a sandpit that was frozen over and that became their rink. They loved this winter sport more than any other. Their father worked for a company who sponsored Frolunda and he took his boys to see that team play as often as possible. Needless to say, Frolunda became their favorite team.
In 1990, they started playing organized hockey and during one practice session the coach asked if anyone wanted to be a goaltender. Joel grabbed Henrik's arm and said his brother would like to. That was the beginning of a historic career. In 1993, the family moved to Bastad in southern Sweden to support older sister Gabriella's tennis career and Henrik and Joel's hockey careers. Both brothers were selected to play for the State team in1995. Henrik and Joel were scouted by Frolunda and the team's manager told their father there was great interest in these twin brothers.
