• Callahan Repeats as McDonald Winner

The New York Rangers have announced the 2009-10 Team Awards, including the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lightspeed Trading; the John Halligan Good Guy Award; the Rangers’ MVP and the Players’ Player Award.

The Rangers’ MVP, voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, was awarded to Henrik Lundqvist. This is the fourth consecutive year that Lundqvist has won the award, which marks the most consecutive years an individual has been named Rangers’ MVP.

Lundqvist currently ranks fifth in the NHL in saves (1,872) and sixth in time on ice (4,078:49). He has recorded four shutouts this season, while ranking ninth in the NHL in goals against average (2.40) and 11th in wins (34). Lundqvist is the only goalie in NHL history to post 30-or-more wins in each of his first five seasons, and the first Rangers goaltender in team history to post five straight 30-win seasons.

The Players’ Player Award, voted on by the Ranger players, was given to captain Chris Drury. The award recognizes the Rangers player who best exemplifies what it means to be a teammate.

Drury was also nominated by the New York Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey.. Only four Ranger players have been selected for this award since its inception in 1968.

Chris Drury

Drury is serving in his second year as Captain of the New York Rangers. He leads all NHL forwards in blocked shots (97) and ranks 22nd in faceoff percentage. Drury was a member of the silver-medal winning US Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team, registering two goals and a plus-three rating.

The John Halligan Good Guy Award, selected by the New York Rangers Media, recognizes players’ cooperation with the media. This year’s recipients are Erik Christensen and Vinny Prospal, both in their first season with the team.

This year the award was renamed in honor of John Halligan, a longtime Rangers and NHL Public Relations executive who passed away earlier this year. Throughout his 53 year career, Halligan was a beloved figure in the world of New York Sports and a champion of hockey in the media.

Ryan Callahan

The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lightspeed Trading, and voted on by the fans, recognizing the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty,” was awarded to Ryan Callahan.

The award is named after New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the call of duty in November of 1988. This award has been given annually to the player who fans believe plays with extra effort on the ice. This is the second consecutive year that Callahan has received this award.

Callahan currently ranks second in the NHL in hits (283) and fourth among forwards in blocked shots (81). Named Alternate Captain prior to the start of the regular season, Callahan ranks second on the Rangers in power play goals (nine) and third in power play points (20).

He has played in 76 games this season, registering 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points, along with 48 penalty minutes.

An impressive 7-1-1 stretch run, including an exhilarating 4-3 home-ice win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night, has delivered the Rangers to the doorstep of an Eastern Conference playoff seed

However, the Rangers still need to win one more contest this afternoon at the Wachovia Center against the Flyers in the final game of the regular season in order to claim a top eight spot in the East and advance to the post-season for a fifth consecutive year.

Following a win by Boston and an overtime loss by Montreal on Saturday, the Rangers can finish in eighth place by beating the Flyers today. That would get them a first-round playoff rematch against the Washington Capitals team that took them out of last year’s playoffs in a thrilling, seven-game series.

“It’s exciting just to know what’s at stake and the position we’re in to get ourselves in the playoffs,” said defenseman Michael Del Zotto. “Everyone counted us out, and we’re kind of proving people wrong. We’ve played some great hockey, solid in our own end, scoring some goals, and obviously (Henrik Lundqvist) has been standing on his head. I’m really looking forward to this.”

With their backs against the wall following a crushing 2-1 loss at the hands of the Bruins up in Boston on March 21, virtually every game the Rangers played became a must-win. And the team responded by garnering 15 of a possible 18 points since.

However Friday night was, in reality, the first game in which the Rangers faced a true must-win situation. Had the Rangers suffered a regulation loss to the Flyers on Friday night, they would have officially been eliminated from post-season contention, and this afternoon’s contest would be meaningless.

With Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist guarding the nets, perhaps the one thing no one can reasonably expect when the Devils and Rangers play each other is the kind of weird, up-and-down goalfest that took place Wednesday night at the Prudential Center.

The goals came fast and furious as the Devils won, 6-3, to snap a two-game losing streak. In the process New Jersey managed to chase Lundqvist from the net after Brian Rolston’s goal at 15:19 of the second period put the Devils, 5-3.

“It was a tough one for me and for us,” Lundqvist said. “I thought we played pretty good — just a couple sequences where the puck definitely didn’t bounce our way — hit our guys and went in. We didn’t make that many mistakes, but they were able to take advantage of the few we made.”

Lundqvist, who allowed five goals on 17 shots, said perhaps he could have played a little more aggressively than he did. But, he said, “it was just a tough night for me. Pucks were hitting our guys, their guys, this was a tough one for me.”

The fifth goal, the one that prompted Rangers coach John Tortorella to remove Lundqvist and insert backup goalie Alex Auld, was an example of one of those where the puck hit one of the Rangers.

2010 Winter Olympics: Henrik Lundqvist Sets Olympic Record

Henrik Lundqvist's dominance of the 2010 Winter Olympics ended late Wednesday night.

Coming into the quarterfinal matchup with Slovakia, Lundqvist had yet to allow a goal. It took over 172 minutes for the opposition to put a puck passed Sweden's netminder. Ironically, it was Marian Gaborik, Lundqvist's teammate on the New York Rangers, that fired a one-timer passed a stretching Lundqvist.

Lundqvist, who broke Don Head's 50-year-old record, for longest time without allowing a goal, allowed two goals within 37 seconds during the second period.

"Casino Night 2010 a True Blue Success"

Casino Night has been a Rangers tradition since the 1999-00 season, ad each year since the launch of Garden of Dreams in the fall of 2006, it has been the team’s single biggest fund-raising event on GDF’s behalf. Monday night was no exception, as all net proceeds went straight to Foundation, including more than $30,000 raised in a dramatic live auction conducted by Rosen.

One of the most appreciative Rangers on Monday was goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who was taking part in his fifth Casino Night and his first since becoming an official Garden of Dreams spokesperson last year.

“I'm so proud to be a part of Garden of Dreams and that they wanted me as a spokesperson,” said Lundqvist. “It feels really good, and it's always fun to meet so many fans who have been around for such a long time, but I guess I feel a little more responsibility to make sure everybody has a good time now.”

Lundqvist made both the fans and GDF a winner on Monday, particularly when it came to the grand finale of the live auction. An autographed Lundqvist Swedish Olympic jersey, presented to the winner by Lundqvist himself, went for $5,250 on the heels of another intense bidding for Marian Gaborik’s signed Team Slovakia Olympic jersey, which brought in another $4,500 for the Foundation.

Sweden is the defending gold medalist from the Turin games in 2006, and they will certainly be in the hunt to repeat.

Lundqvist is the starter for sure and he was the goalie when they won the gold medal in 2006. He is one of the best in the world and will be a major reason for Sweden's success in Vancouver. Markstrom is a young phenom that has torn apart the SEL and deserves the backup role.

Rangers 3, Devils 1 - 2/6/10

Henrik Lundqvist turned in one of his best efforts of the season, giving the slumping New York Rangers a badly needed lift.

Lundqvist made 41 saves and Ryan Callahan sparked a three-goal outburst in the second period as the Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 3-1 on Saturday night.

Callahan, Marian Gaborik and Chris Drury scored for the Rangers, who ended a two-game losing streak with only their second win in the last nine games.

But the key for the Rangers was Lundqvist, who ended a personal six-game losing streak and improved his record to 17-6-5 against New Jersey.

“I just tried to battle the last two weeks,” said Lundqvist. “I have been working hard. It was an intense game, fun to play in and big relief to get a win at home. It is a big one for us to get, in a lot of ways.”

Playing, and beating, the Devils added a little extra spice.

“Obviously, everybody in the room gets pretty jacked up playing against the Devils,” Callahan said. “I think Hank was. When you know he is on his game, we’re going to have a great chance to win. It was uplifting to see Hank play like that.”

Both teams had better scoring chances in the second period, with Lundqvist and Quick both performing impressively. Lundqvist bookended his fine second period with a pair of terrific saves. First he made a lightning-quick save with his left pad after Brad Richardson intercepted a Dan Girardi pass in the slot just 22 seconds into the period. And then Lundqvist closed out the middle stanza by robbing Randy Jones on a one-timer by bursting across the crease from right-to-left with 23.4 seconds left.

Jones was denied on several good chances in the second by Lundqvist, in particular during the Kings’ two power plays in the period. Jarret Stoll also fell victim to Lundqvist on a pair of booming power play shots.

“He played good,” Tortorella said of Lundqvist. “After a few days off, he played very well.”

Perhaps the best save for Quick came 3:05 into the third period when he held his ground and denied Gaborik on a partial break off a head-man pass by Prospal. He also made a gem of a stop with 11 seconds left in the game when he smothered Ryan Callahan’s perfect deflection down low.

“It’s tough, that tip I had from Vinny I thought I had a chance at (Quick’s) five-hole, but he made a good stop,” said Callahan. “We made a good push there at the end, but I guess a little too little too late.”

The Rangers return home and are back in action at Madison Square Garden on Thursday when they host the Washington Capitals.

Gaborik had his 10th career hat trick, Chad Johnson made 34 saves for his first NHL win, and the Rangers ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Avalanche on Sunday night. "It's a boost of energy for this club and myself as well to finally get a win and feel good about ourselves," Gaborik said.

The hat trick was Gaborik's first since he had five goals for Minnesota against the Rangers on Dec. 20, 2007. He joined the Rangers as a free agent over the summer after spending his first eight seasons in Minnesota.

"Any time a guy scores a hat trick, it's a good offensive night," Colorado left wing T.J. Galiardi said. "We've got to know a guy like that is going to be a threat all night and he burned us."

Gaborik's first goal gave him 500 career points and his second gave him his sixth multi-goal game of the season. He has four goals in his last two games and 33 overall, the sixth time in nine NHL campaigns that he has had 30 or more.

He completed the hat trick on a breakaway with 10:43 left in the third period.

"You could tell right from the start that he had that jump, he had that swagger," Johnson said. "He was beating guys wide, having control of the puck. The other guys look up to a guy like him to lead the way and when he's playing his best hockey, I think other guys pick it up and follow his lead.

After the game, Lundqvist dropped the game puck into Johnson's glove and congratulated him on his first career victory.

In their final home game before a three-game trip out West, the Rangers did not get the result they were seeking. Instead of a victory to bolster them as they jet off to Phoenix, the Blueshirts dropped their fourth straight contest, falling 5-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Ryan Callahan scored the lone goal for the Rangers, who have netted just three total during their four-game slide.

“I didn’t think we played that bad of a game,” Callahan said. “If you break it down, I thought we battled hard and we had a lot of time in their zone. Right now we need that extra bounce and go from there.”

Carolina’s win was backstopped by a sensational outing from goaltender Cam Ward, who made 21 saves in the second period alone, and finished with 37. Sergei Samsonov and Eric Staal both contributed two goals apiece for the visitors.

“I think Ward played great tonight for them and gave them a boost,” said center Brian Boyle. “They capitalized on that with some scoring. We need to do that, get those goals.”

The Rangers could not have gotten off to a much worse start then they did on Wednesday. Before four minutes had elapsed on the game clock, they trailed Carolina 2-0. And although they did not allow another goal the remainder of the first period, things did not get much better for the home team over the first 20 minutes of play.

“Of course that’s not the start we’re looking for,” said alternate captain Vinny Prospal. “But there was still a lot of time left in the hockey game. But we got just one goal, and that’s not enough.”

Carolina struck for goals 25 seconds apart to open up a two-goal lead by the 3:36 mark of the first. Positioned down low in front of Henrik Lundqvist, Carolina’s Patrick Dwyer deflected Joni Pitkanen’s slap shot into the net for his fourth goal at 3:11. Staal, the Hurricanes’ new captain, doubled the advantage on the game’s next shift when his bad angle shot from left wing somehow eluded Lundqvist at 3:36.

“I have to be better, plain and simple,” said Lundqvist.

Philadelphia's mustachioed pugilist got the blood boiling on the ice and in the postgame dressing rooms last night by dropping the gloves with Marian Gaborik, the Ranger superstar who in 10 NHL seasons has 248 goals and now two fighting majors. The brief and predictably one-sided scrap came 5:43 into the second period of a fight-filled 2-0 Ranger loss.

"I've seen highlights, and I don't see that guy as a smart guy," Henrik Lundqvist said of Carcillo. "It is disrespectful; you don't go after a top player like that. It doesn't matter if they're just holding each other, you don't drop the gloves - he knows who his opponent is. I'll say it again: He doesn't look that smart to me, and he showed it tonight."

Asked about the long memories hockey players hold for these sort of things, Lundqvist said, "Oh yeah. We will remember this for sure, and he should be ready for it."

Rangers Crush Bolts 8-2 at MSG!

NEW YORK—The last time the New York Rangers scored eight goals was on Jan. 23, 2002. Almost exactly eight years later, the Rangers matched that feat with an 8–2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The victory along with the 6–2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday mark the first time in nearly three years that the Rangers have scored six goals or more in back-to-back games.

Before the game, Rangers head coach John Tortorella said, “We had a little bit of edge to our game and that’s something very important that we need to do consistently.” The Blueshirts have now brought that edge to two straight home games.

Lundqvist, on the other hand, continued his stellar play this season and hasn’t allowed more than two goals since December. The two Tampa Bay scores came from Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier and Alex Tanguay.

The Rangers climbed into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with the big win. They travel to face the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday hoping to avenge a 6–0 pasting from late December.

Henrik wore his new helmet in Sundays's game again the Montreal Canadiens. The new mask art is similar to last year but taken to a whole new level in white and metallic blue and a white back, sporting the Bauer logo.

The 25-year-old, second-year New York Rangers goaltending sensation, who finished third last season in voting for the Vezina Trophy (the NHL’s best goaltender award), set the Rangers rookie goaltending wins record (30, the most since 1942) and snagged a gold medal for Sweden at the 2006 Olympics, told New York Press that being beautiful means little to him, playing ABBA after a win means a lot to his team and being a goalie means being a little lonely.

NY PRESS: Last year you were one of People magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful People in the World.” How does that make you feel considering that you spend 99 percent of your professional life wearing a mask?

Henrik Lundqvist: I think the People magazine was a fun thing, but it was more for people who were, how do you say it, passing the time. I don’t know if I really fit. I had a good
year on the ice. Obviously, without a facemask, I would be in the hospital right now.

Your identical twin brother, Joel, plays in the Dallas Stars organization. Once you made the list shouldn’t they have included him?

(laughs) Well, we have different styles. That’s for sure. Maybe you can ask the jury about that.

With Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Eric Staal and you, there are so many big NHL stars that are 25 and under. How often do you guys get together and talk about the future of the league?

Not too much. The schedule is so busy we don’t have time to meet other players. I met the other guys at an awards banquet after last season, but it was just to say “hi” and a quick talk.

In order to promote this league, why is it so important for fans to see NHL players with their helmets and masks off?

I think it’s always good if you can reach out there and find new fans. I know they’re talking about doing shootouts without the helmets. That’s a good idea. It’s hard for people to recognize hockey players and how they look. A thing like that might be helpful.

Lots of people blame owner James L. Dolan for the Knicks’ troubles; why don’t the same people give him a little credit for the Rangers turnaround?

That’s a good question. I don’t know who you should blame when things are going bad for a team. Hopefully, this year the Knicks do better and people might be more satisfied with the team. Dolan, he’s a great guy.

Many people thought New York Islanders owner Charles Wang was crazy when he signed goalie Rick DiPietro to an historic 15-year, $67.5 million contract. What’s so crazy about that?

It’s a long time, especially in sports. You don’t know what’s going to happen with injuries. It’s hard to tell how good you’ll be in 10 years, let alone 15. I mean it’s really good for DiPietro. He’s a great goaltender. It’s just that it was really surprising that anyone was able to sign a contract like that.

Back in Frolunda, Sweden, you played guitar in a rock band?

The name of the band was Box Play. We only played covers. It was Swedish rock. We were not good at all. It was taken out of proportion when I got over here. I love music. It takes your energy away from hockey. There’s so much hockey going on all the time—games, practices—so it’s fun to have something else to do. It makes you relax.

You’ve played hockey in arenas all over the world. What’s so special about Madison Square Garden?

I think it’s the history. The crowd is so intense. There’s just some buildings, when you play in them, you feel the difference. It’s in the bricks.

What about Rangers fans is different than other hockey fans?

In my experience, they are very, um, how would you say, “excited.” They are really into the team and how things are going, and they really want to know everything. It’s hard to explain but [the Rangers] are obviously a very important thing to a lot of people.

That doesn’t scare you at all?

I mean, of course it comes with pressure, too. We want to perform well. So it helps you put a lot of pressure on yourself to achieve.

In baseball, some years they say it’s a pitcher’s league and other years a hitter’s league. Is the NHL a goalie’s league?

I think it might have been before the lockout. But with the new rules, it has changed. There’s a lot more goals scored right now. I say it’s a “team game league” now. It used to be very important to have lot of star players. Now it’s more important to have a very solid, four-line team.

Sometimes, are you just dying to bust out of the net, skate the full length of ice and score a goal?

Not really. The feeling to make a good save for the team, that’s the feeling I like. I don’t mind scoring, though. That could be a lot of fun. But I’m not allowed to cross the red line, so I’d have to do it from my own end.

Last year, you privately struggled with migraine headaches. Doctors said it came from grinding your teeth at night. How’s that coming along?

I had some problems over the summer, but when I got back here, I got some medication. It feels really good now. It feels good to be 100 percent out on the ice. When you have something that disturbs you, it’s hard to perform your best.

Is it lonely being a goalie?

(long pause) It’s a strange position. Not strange, but it’s very different. It’s almost like you’re on your own. Yes, like you’re lonely. You still feel support from your teammates, but when you’re out there, you’re kind of doing your own thing. You’re playing your own game. A lot of guys depend on you. Sure, you feel their support, yet, as I said, you’re out there on your own. But I like it. That’s why I’m a goalie.

New York Rangers Coach John Tortorella Tries to Shut Out Concerns Over Henrik Lundqvist

John Tortorella bristled at the notion that he should keep his antennae up concerning Henrik Lundqvist's psyche, given the hard luck the Rangers' goaltender has experienced in his last two losses. Some of his players, meanwhile, were the ones who brought it up.

"That is one game; we've played pretty well," the coach said. "I don't want you to start separating Henrik and the team; I'm not going there. We've played pretty well. We stunk (Thursday night), which is unacceptable, I'll give you that, but it's (one game)."

Thursday's loss to the Senators gave Lundqvist back-to-back losses despite his stopping 77 of 78 shots in the two games - the first a classic goaltenders' duel against Martin Brodeur and the Devils, the second a dreary display against emergency call-up Mike Brodeur and the Ottawa Senators. Tortorella was mystified after Thursday's loss as to how his team could have taken its struggling opponent so lightly after two days of warnings from the coach. Tonight in St. Louis, they'll get another crack at it against a Blues team that has won three straight following a seven-game skid and is on the fringe of the Western Conference playoff picture.

Lundqvist kept the game scoreless with a phenomenal glove save on Kelly’s wicked rising snap shot off a 2-on-1 rush at 10:26. And at 11:40, he alertly took away the lower part of the net to deny Kovalev, who won a race with Dan Girardi to a loose puck, and followed with a spinning shot on goal.

The Rangers finally mounted extensive offensive pressure late in the second period. Granted their first power play of the game when Matt Carkner was whistled for boarding Sean Avery, the Rangers had several good scoring chances thwarted by Brodeur.

Tortorella changed up his power play units, replacing Ryan Callahan on the top unit with Brandon Dubinsky, and using Callahan, Artem Anisimov, and Erik Christensen up front on the second unit. Good puck movement and better scoring chances followed, but the Rangers were unable to score and the game remained deadlocked 0-0.

A second unsuccessful power play 39 seconds into the third period -- after Drury drew a penalty by driving hard to the net -- also kept the game scoreless. It remained that way until Campoli took advantage of loose play by the Rangers in front of their own net after a slick pass by Kovalev, the former Ranger.

“When you don’t score, one bad play or mistake costs you the game,” said Lundqvist. “It’s frustrating for everybody.”

The most memorable gift you’ve received?
My first pair of hockey pants. They were dark green Jofas, and they were very ugly.

Can I get a fourth? Because the Stanley Cup would definitely be on there.

(Henrik played in a rock band in Sweden called “Box Play.” He's been known to ride around in New York City cabs with his friends and play acoustic sets. He’s particularly fond of the Foo Fighters.)

Which of those 3 things do you think you’ll actually get?
The Maserati. Definitely.

(Henrik just signed a 6-year $41.25 million contract. He can afford to buy all three for himself, if he wants.)

I gave "Breitling" watches to the six trainers of the New York Rangers. It was the Chrono Super Ocean one with leather straps.

Last gift you’ve received?
I got a Nixon watch from my girlfriend, Therese.

Favorite gift holiday?
Christmas. I used to get all new hockey equipment. Now I get to give a lot of gifts.

Do you feel bad about throwing a gift away if you don’t like it?
Yes, but I still do it. I give a lot of those things to friends and family. Shhh.

When was the last time you gave someone flowers or chocolates?
I gave Godiva chocolates to my parents not too long ago… chocolate truffles, actually.

What makes a bad gift bad?
T-shirts! First, I don’t wear them that often, but I get so many bad ones given to me. No more t-shirts, please.

And a good gift good?
I actually like getting nice ties, even though that may sound boring. We wear ties to all of our games, and I also like to wear ties a lot when I go out at night.

"When I see him talk to the other goalie, I know he's on top of his game," said Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who made 25 saves to improve to 19-14-5. "He's a great player, and when he's confident, you can tell. He talks more, he's more physical. He just gets more involved in everything. Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 25 of 27 shots he faced in the Rangers' 5-2 win over Dallas Wednesday night.

Lundqvist has been solid for the Rangers of late, going 3-0-1 over his past four starts, and allowing just seven goals over that span. His .920 save percentage and 2.41 GAA this season are indicators of how consistent the Swedish netminder has been for New York. Lundqvist improves to 19-14-5 with the victory.

Henrik Lundqvist played in nine games in the Swedish second tier before joining Frolunda's junior team. At the 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in Moscow, Russia, his play brought Sweden to a fourth place finish in the tournament. He played in 18 games in the league and led the team in minutes played by a goaltender. Lundqvist played for Frolunda and led them to their second straight Anton Cup. The game was held at the Stockholm Globe Arena. In December, Henrik was rated the sixth best European prospect by the The Hockey News., He was the only goaltender in their top ten list. In that same year, 2004, he was ranked seventh on a list of top goaltending prospects for the Rangers.

During the 2005 season, Lundqvist broke four Swedish national records. He had the lowest goals against average, highest save percentage, longest goalless streak and most shutouts in a season. He was named Best Swedish Player, Best Goaltender and was selected as the league's MVP by his fellow players. In 180 appearances with Frolunda he led them to four consecutive playoff appearances and won two titles in 2003 and 2005.

NEW YORK
On October 8, 2005, starting Rangers goaltender was injured and Lundqvist made his NHL debut. The game ended in an overtime loss to the Devils but he stopped 24 of 27 shots. His first career NHL win came just a few days later, ironically against the Devils. The Florida Panthers fell victim to Lundqvist's first shutout game on October 17th of that same year. He became the first rookie goaltender to record a shutout for the Rangers since John Vanbiesbrouck in 1985. Lundqvist also was the first Ranger rookie goaltender with 20 wins in a season since Mike Richter in 1990-1. Before the season was over, he had achieved 30 wins, breaking the rookie record for wins, putting him on his way to be among league leaders with many categories. Henrik was 5th in goals against average, 4th in save percentage, 11th in wins and tied for 16th in shutouts with two. Unfortunately, his playoff season was not as successful but he was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, given to to the NHL's best goaltender. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and won the 2005-06 Met-Life/Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. This is a New York Rangers team award.

Henrik and brother Joel are the third set of twins to play each other in an NHL game. On December 14, 2006, against the Dallas Stars, Henrik became the first goaltender to face his twin brother and the Rangers won the game. Henrik became the first Ranger goalie since Mike Richter to post a playoff shutout. He was also a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and was tied for third place in balloting.

Henrik Lundqvist re-signed to a one year, $4.25 million contract with the Rangers during the offseason. On February 13, 2008 Lundqvist signed a contract for six years with the Rangers for $41.25 million. This made him the highest paid goaltender in the NHL on average over the length of his contract.

Henrik is the first Ranger goaltender since Eddie Giacomin in 1970-71 to record eight shutouts in a single season. He accomplished this on February 24th, 2008 and on March 6th he recorded his 30th win of the season.

INTERNATIONAL PLAY
Lundqvist has been a leader in international play and among goaltenders he is at the top of the list. He has played for Sweden in many tournaments and his most memorable performance occurred at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin where he led his native country to the gold medal over their fiercest rival, Finland. He also has led team Sweden as a goaltender to their first medal in inline hockey at the 2002 Inline Hockey World Championships.

Henrik Lundqvist was born on March 2, 1982 in Are, Sweden. Henrik and his twin brother Joel were born to Eva Johansson and Peter Lundqvist. The area of Sweden that these two brothers grew up in is best known for alpine skiing, but they chose to play ice hockey instead. At a very early age, as kindergarteners, they would skate on a sandpit that was frozen over and that became their rink. They loved this winter sport more than any other. Their father worked for a company who sponsored Frolunda and he took his boys to see that team play as often as possible. Needless to say, Frolunda became their favorite team.

In 1990, they started playing organized hockey and during one practice session the coach asked if anyone wanted to be a goaltender. Joel grabbed Henrik's arm and said his brother would like to. That was the beginning of a historic career. In 1993, the family moved to Bastad in southern Sweden to support older sister Gabriella's tennis career and Henrik and Joel's hockey careers. Both brothers were selected to play for the State team in1995. Henrik and Joel were scouted by Frolunda and the team's manager told their father there was great interest in these twin brothers.
